Sun: full sun preferred Tolerate: can grow in partial shade, some tolerance to drought (intolerant to salt spray and soil salt)
Uses: Hardy, more tolerant to deer than pines, good wildlife food and cover. Provides winter forage for some wildlife. Attracts colorful winter finches. Used for screen, shade and windbreaks. Planted in riparian, upland and treeline sites.

Note: Tolerant of clay soil but good drainage is a must. The shallow, spreading root system benefits from a 3-4" layer of organic mulch.
